In the middle of the 16th century, the cathedral had a strict but elegant appearance: it was painted in the fresco technique and imitated brickwork. At that time there were no porches, St. Basil's Church. The bell tower looked different. Without later extensions, the cathedral initially looked like a building with a strict composition: the hipped church was surrounded by eight separate churches, some of which were consecrated in honor of the saints, whose days of memory fell on the decisive battles for Kazan, this complex was more of a memorial.
